polling

I am trying to poll a controller what I need to poll the hole time, if I use a timer it's hard to time the action of the button been pressed and also this removed any way of detecting if the button is been helped down or multi use of the button, is there anyway to be able to detect the controller as a key press rather then polling it on the timer?

When I say polling I want to be able to grab the controls actions any time and even pipe the thought the onkey actions I have included the example what I did years ago but it's the same thing I am working with, but I have to use timers what create large problems.

Problem one the timer triggers multiplue times there for a on hold function would have to be piped some how though another timer
right now I have two timers one that dose the movement and another what kind of dose mouse movements but another problem there is I can't drag because of not been able to detect the holding of the key.

I know I doing it all wrong but as you know I been working on the RPG engine many years I worked it out now almost 16 years from the first ever.

The controllers I am using are Xbox One via official Dongle and USB not tried it via Bluetooth but I believe it would work fine two.

I am able to get all the keys been pressed and mutiplue keys been pressed but getting them to react right isn't as easy I know this is mostly a me problem and looking at it all wrong or maybe I am trying to push AMS two far but I still can't like it die and I don't want to create my work else where I still trying to find a little life left in AMS.
