  • Fair Use Question

    Hello everyone,

    I have question that I really want to know the answer;

    Is there any percentage to use the open source without copyright ?
    What I mean is;

    If i change the %10 or %20 of the original source, can I say it is my software ?

    Thanks

    That depends on the license attached to that project, usually creators of an open source
    project do want you to mention them as original creators of the product and if you change
    it, they still want you to mention them (and for example link back to the original product).

    Anyhow, most open source projects have a license attached to it, read it well. You usually
    can't claim it to be yours, even after modifying 10% or 20% of the code.

      I agree with IP here, I release my Open Source as 'WTFPL' many release under one of the versions of GPL, so already read the lic that comes with the software, but I would say always try and credit the dev whom created it and give back to the Open Source users.

        The majority of open source allows changes to the base code but usually the creator still has to acknowledged as the originator AND it is normal to put the modified source out into the public domain. Some code is released into the public domain as open source but does not allow modification. Exactly what you can do will be in the licence agreement that comes with it.
        You may or may not be able to use it freely in a commercial product, sometimes the creators will want a slice of what you generate using a different licencing scheme, again the licence will tell you what you are allowed to do.
        Even if you are allowed to use them freely and without any restrictions you should credit the original work (usually someone has put a lot of work into it) and if you make a profit on an app it is a component of then passing some back to the originators is going to be well recieved.
