Just wondering if autoplay was any use for creating a membership system where i can add and update records of members of a youth group etc, or am i on the wrong tracks.

Thatvis just a database driven app so yes many of us have made data base driven apps local and remote but if your new to ams i would say get to know the app better become friendly with the help file and the only resources.

Once you have got your foot in the door buy ams if you havent already and let the wonders come to you.

As Kingzooly says what you want is a front end for a database.
You need to know about some core things .....
* databases, to create the initial database structure
* connecting to databases
* writing SQL queries
On the APMS end on top of simply adding entry fields you need to know about ....
* reading and writing to databases
* putting data into tables

As a first project this might be a little abitious without the right background knowledge but overall it is quite do-able.

If the learning curve is a little too steep then you could cobble something up with an office type database system; Libre office, Open Office or M$ access could all do this.
What APMS will give you is a lot more control over the look and feel, and a great feeling of satisfaction when you have your working application.
