• First post from new computer

This is my first post on the new computer. Unbelievably fast, never seen anything like it. (2.66 G Intel4 with 1 Gig DDR RAM and a dual bios MB) You know what that means Bruce? CDs are on the way.

Enjoy your machine Corey. We are all like little children with our new toys :-)
Been there...again and again. Always great to put your hands on a new piece of equipment.
If only there wouldn't be the hassle of installing EVERYTHING again.....
We are all waiting for your masterpiece...

Actually Yossi it wasn't too bad. This amchine installs even large programs in mere seconds. Most often you barely even get a chance to see the progress bar as it just flashes for a second then it's done.

They even open fast, for example Adobe Acrobat 5.0 opens in just less than one second from a cold start. I've never seen anything like it. I think it's a combo of the chip and dual bios MB because I've had puters with BIG RAM and fast hard drives before but I've never seen anything like this.

And in terms of stability I can't believe it. I intentionally opened like 4 big apps at the same time just to see, no probs... Again I think the dual bios helps stability a lot plus I got a 4 fan 450 W power supply and they say that's the key to true stability. Anyhow, I rant.

Life just got a little bit funner.

Re: First post from new computer

What motherboard did you go with, Corey? I'm guessing it's a GigaByte board, since dual BIOS is kind of their gimmick.

All of the dual BIOS setups I've seen are just one chip in use, one for backup...they don't make any difference on the day to day operation of the system, they're just there in case one chip gets fried during a BIOS flash or gets hit by a virus...which IME happens about once every, oh, never.

Aside from a good quality motherboard and no cheap components...stability is all about a large power surplus, steady/clean power (good quality components in the PSU and lots of BIIIIG capacitors on the motherboard), good quality RAM, and a solid chipset.

I'm waiting for late summer/early fall to do my next upgrade, but in the meantime I'm suffering a bit of VIA ****...my KT133a chipset has trouble with high demand PCI devices, and hacking the BIOS to use a higher PCI latency (64 or 96 clocks instead of 32) only alleviates the problem, it doesn't solve it. Basically everything is fine except transferring from 2 to 5GB of data to a drive on one particular IDE port on a Promise controller will lock the system up hard. It's a problem with how the Promise card interacts with the VIA southbridge chip's bus arbitration.

The board is incredibly stable otherwise, though, and overclocks up the wazoo.

Re: First post from new computer

Yes I went with a Gigabyte Ultra 2 board and a nice big 4 fan power supply (450 W), excellent ram (1 Gig DDR PC2700) too. genuine Intel4 2.66 Gig chip. Great system, I bet if it was overclocked it would really cruise...

My old system, "Old Crashy" was a VIA chipset, and likely the cause of all my woes past and current including the bit about getting my heart broken at the age of 9, a full 20 years before I was even to own the computer which gives you a real good idea of just how profoundly baraka'ed the VIA chipset is. I also heard that prolonged usage of VIA chipsets can lead to mange too so have a nice soak in some kerosene tonight just to be safe.
