  • A new kind of electricty discovered...

They discovered a new kind of electricity for the first time in 100 years or so at the Univeristy of Alberta in Edmonton, yay guys!!! http://www.abc.net.au/am/content/2003/s971340.htm (I used to teach web design there)

I read about this yesterday, these guys are brilliant. I think that it’s the same kind of electricity as any other kind, just a new way of generating it. I don’t want to take anything away from these guys, they are so much smarter than me it hurts, but I’m not sure I agree with everything the article says. It states that the last time someone came up with a new way of generating electricity was Mr. Faraday some 160 years ago.

I’m an uneducated fool, but this just doesn’t sound correct to me. I’m probably wrong, but to my mind, it seems that generating electricity by means of nuclear fission, is a 20th century technology.

Then again, I really know anything about history, and even less about physics.

I suppose that they are talking about core technologies though. Like generating or capturing electricity through a chemical process, or by magnetism (I think that was Faraday’s contribution), or by radiation. I guess that heat and sunlight are both forms of radiation, so nuclear fission, could be seen as just an extension of dragging your feet across the carpet.

All arguments aside, it does look like a cool invention, I hope that they are able to scale it up, for practical applications.

Agreed. From what I read in another article nano is actually the big killer app they are looking for first. (in addition to scaling it up) But then I know no more about this then I saw in the news today...
