VNC must be installed on the computer to be controlled. TeamViewer has a single executable that does not require installation...

UltraVNC Single Click doesn't need to be installed... neither does the vncviewer.
I ran the teamviewer, it does look like it's vnc based.
1/2 a second google search for "teamviewer vnc" 2nd hit:

Like I said; vnc based, you can do it all already, I don't like the teamviewer "end user client" -- too restrictive IMHO.

The best remote desktop solution I've seen.

This is a pretty cool little proggie for helping your friends and family out (but not your clients unless you pay) with their computer problems without ever having to leave the house or even install anything. I just tried it and it works like a charm! I was even playing a bit of COD4 on my friends pc: kinda choppy but fun.

It has text chat, shortcut-key usage, FTP, VOIP and many other features and best of all, it's free for non-commercial use.

And if you have average good support for graphics you should try
sudo apt-get install emerald
and then maybe try my BlackBuntu theme with GTK, emerald and icons theme
I know about compiz, who doesn't ? It's first software I installed on my laptop

Anyhow, about team viewer on Linux, the only solution seems to be Wine, according to things I read on websites.

I've got ubuntu satanic edition, don't worry, I just have it
for the style I know emerald, I prefer compiz and this version of ubuntu

While you are at it, and you have avarage good support for graphics, try
sudo apt-get install compiz* aswell to insatll compiz fusion, great
graphic effects for ubuntu :yes
