  • MPeg1 playback troubles

    Hi folks,

I am deciding on an autoplay application development tool. When I was creating my sample CD with the trial version, I have run into an error on an mpeg1 format file playback. The control when built and either burned and tested from a CD or in preview mode refuses to play claiming the format is not supported.

Yet the machine can play the file directly with WMP without trouble. Any suggestions as to where I look or should I consider using an .AVI with the IR32 codec?

Thanks in advance for the help

Is this an MPEG you created? Give some specifics - what is the data rate? What is the aspect ratio? What is the FPS? Is it NTSC or PAL source? What software was used to create the MPEG?

If your MPEG is under 10 MB, Send me the MPEG file, and I'll have a look.

      Re: MPeg1 playback troubles

The mpeg-1 video clip was created with Adobe Premiere 6.5
Since I didn't see any particular documentation on what stats I should be using I have tried a few settings the last set was as follows:

      NTSC MPEG-1
      352x240
      29.97 fps
      44100 hz 16 bit stereo
      237.32 kb/sec

Any suggestions as to what I should be using output wise. I am looking to create some internal training CD's for a charity which I volunteer for.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Do you mean 237.32 Kilo bits or Bytes? If it's Kilobits, you are probably too low for MPEG-1. Try bumping to about 750 at least. If it's KiloBytes, you are way too high, bring it down to something more like 95 for starters. Either way, it looks like a bad number to me.

Well I have adjusted things a bit to the following settings and still no go:

            NTSC MPEG-1
            30 fps
            800 kilobits/sec data rate
            44khz 8 bit mono audio.

I have tried 8 different settings exporting via the Adobe Premiere 6.5 Mpeg codec from Main Concepts and still I get the following error under AMS 4 when I preview or build this item:

            File format not supported.

Yet in Design view it plays, and on any machine I have WMP on it plays just fine.

I did see how Premiere has the ability to save/load the mpeg settings. Anyone have some generic ones that are known to work. Generally the setting presets Adobe comes with are for DV/DVD/SVD/VCD.

Technically I can use the AVI I created for this particular project as the video itself is small but some of the training segments we want to create are upwards of an hour and I would like to be able to create them in a format I can get all of that on a single CD like I see so many training disks for various companies.

Thanks for the help because I am definately not a video guru.

              Re: MPeg1 playback troubles

seems to me you are not using standard parameters.
First of all, if u r NTSC, use 320X240. Then use 1150 Kbps.
This is a more standard quality parameter.
              Good Luck

                Re: MPeg1 playback troubles

Thanks for the tips but I solved my problem. It has nothing to do with the actual video I was using itself. It seems that my using the default template object and trying to rush into making something was my error here.

I had changed the Video Player Object to reflect the new name of my movie but I didn't realize until I sat down did the tutorial that I believe you authored Eric.

Turns out that the properties of the background page which referenced loading the movie was still on the default sample.mpg file, which in my distribution doesn't exist. After fixing this, all of my video files function flawlessly.

What does confuse me is the fact the error I got in media play was "Invalid file format" rather than "File not found" It is rather strange in my mind given that my project had no real sample.mpg objectat all.

I realize this is definately a case of getting under the hood and looking closer. At least AMS is a heck of a lot easier than Director.

                Thanks for the help

Good to know it was something simple with your project and not the MPEG. Thanks for the update.
