• 3D Program for AMS

I am going to purchase a 3D software program and I would appreciate some input as to what type of 3D program the AMS community would recommend.

I want a program that is relatively easy to use (doesn't everyone) and without a steep learning curve.

I have checked several programs on the net, and its seems that the main contenders are 3D Studio Max and Swift 3D. I also came across Xara 3D which seems to be mostly for text.

    Thanks for the input.

What are you trying to do Henry?

Xara does mostly text and is not particularly useful as a standalone 3D app. Swift 3D is not really a 3D app, more of a 3D conversion app for flash format really.

3D Studio Max is the grandpappy of all 3D apps in my opinion. Complete flexibility and awesome power but a steep learning curve.

See all those amazing graphics behind all the cool TV shows, commercials, and network IDs? Most of those are made in 3D Max...

      Re: 3D Program for AMS

3D Studio Max is by no means simple, and if it's your first foray into the 3D world, you'll be overwhelmed at least for a little while.

Swift 3D is great for Flash stuff, but beyond that, it's pretty limited. There are some plug-ins for Lightwave and SoftImage.

The real pinnacle of the 3D world is Maya. Extremely powerful software.

I use a variety of tools personally, but I especially like Cinema4D by Maxon Software. I upgraded from Infini-D a few weeks ago since my 3D work was growing in complexity. The price is right, and its integration with After Effects is simply unmatched. I still can't believe how fast it is.

I have used Lightwave 3D extensively before, and its interface may very well be the hardest to learn.

The truth is that any 3D software worth its salt has a pretty steep learning curve for first-timers. Those who are transferring from another 3D product can usually pick up a new tool much quicker than complete novices. There are many different areas of expertise that you are demanded to command: Lighting, 3D layout, Knowledge of motion physics, mathematics, knowledge of camera lenses, understanding of delivery tools (i.e. frame rates, resolutions, interlacing, etc.), keyframing, the list goes on and on.

If its merely Flash output that you are looking for, go with Swift 3D. It's easier than any other tool for that job. For anything else, look around more.

        Re: 3D Program for AMS

Hi Corey. I plan to create and modify logoes primarily, plus add some 3d text and simple 3d graphics to my AMS projects and to a few web pages.

Thanks Eric. Based on the comments from you and Corey it looks as if Swift 3D is the way for me to go.
