hi, in autoplay 3.0 the program took the audio files and encoded them into data and no one could steal your audio files from the finished project, how do i do that in 4.0 ?

Hey there,

This is actually a pretty cool question. I've done some research after reading the subsiquent posts and my only question is: is there any recommended freeware software that can "safely" alter any given file's extension (mainly .mp3). By safely, I mean in a way that doesn't leave any effects on the user's computer? Thanks in advance!

You can just change a file's extension anytime you like. Try dragging an mp3 into a text editor and then save it as "mysong.mus" or any other file extension and then drag and drop it onto your mp3 player, it'll play just fine...

Or save a movie fle from your favorite video editor as "mymovie.gum" instead of mymovie.avi and drag it onto your media player, it'll play just fine.

Doesn't matter what the file extension is as long as the original file is intact.

Thanks for the post on the file. When Autoplay Zone or a comperable site comes out, will there be a place for people to catalog good utilities like this.

And is there a site that was going to be out last week or this ( I forget) that was going to have templates and such on it.

You don't need to use a text editor at all. Just rename the file in Windows.

Select the file's icon, press F2, change the name.

The "magic" nature of file extensions is all an illusion. The file itself doesn't change when the extension changes...in fact, most media files have information in a "header" at the beginning of the file that indicates what kind of file it is.

The only thing that "changes" when you change a file's extension is what Windows does when you double-click (or right-click) on the file. Windows uses the file extension to determine what associated viewer to use with that "kind" of file. So if you change a .mp3 file to .txt, Windows will launch Notepad and try to load the MP3 into that. Notepad won't be able to do anything useful with it. But if you load that same ".txt" file into Winamp, it will recognize that it's an MP3 and play it just fine.

BTW, the notion of associating programs with files by the extension isn't universal...for instance, in the Amiga OS, file names were completely arbitrary, you named files with extensions purely for your own ease of recognition, and didn't have to use extensions at all. The operating system used the file header to determine what program to use when you performed some action like double-clicking on a file.
