Re: Checking for Windows 98 SE

I usually use Win98 for flight sims and stuff....
Lorne, what flight sims do you have? Have you tried the latest MS Flight Sim 2004? The improvements on real world weather is great [updates every 15 minutes now]. Setting it to 'Major thunderstorm' is also great, the sounds are excellent, especially on 5.1 etc! Got Combat Flight Sim 3 too, great for blowing yur friends out of the sky and watching them fall to the ground as a trail of smoke!

Re: Checking for Windows 98 SE

That could just be because 98 FE isn't officially supported any more. 98 SE might be the minimum they ever list now.

There technically isn't much difference between 98 FE and SE anyway, and once you get FE fully updated, the point is largely moot IMO.

But you never know. The setup might refuse to install on FE (even for purely artificial reasons), and then the point is definitely moot.

Meanwhile, I really have to get a USB controller setup...ah, to have $1500 for an upgraded Thrustmaster Cougar...

Eric, I happen to have a WIN98 (FE) right next to me. What would you like me to do with that code - On Initialize?

Rhosk!!!! You may save my day (or at least my feeble mind)...

Sure, you can try that code, but I'm pretty sure it's tip-top right now. So....

OK, here's what I want you to try, provided you have a high speed internet connection and the time to give this a whirl.

Install WMP 9 on your Win 98 FE box. Does it work (I mean, does it allow you to install)? Here's a link in case you need it:
Click Here For The Download Page

Of course, if you already have Windows Media Player 9 installed on that computer, please let me know. That would certainly answer the question.

THANKS - let me know if there's ever any video you need professionally compressed.

Re: Checking for Windows 98 SE

The code worked great. Then, I tried to install manually and it wouldn't do it. Probably what you expected? I'll still be around for a bit if you need anything else.

                Thanks, Ron...

That's precisely what I anticipated - thanks for taking the time to confirm it, though!

OH - and yes, Corey - your forums ROCK!

No, I haven't bothered with the MS Flight Sim line in ages. Only combat sims for me these days.

I actually haven't been playing sims for a while, although I used to play them a lot...I'm just starting to get back into it again. (I used to tutor people through flight school, too...at one point I got the highest mark ever recorded for a pilot scholarship entrance exam -- there was even a brief investigation because they suspected me of cheating, but I just really knew my stuff. Then, after I was accepted for the scholarship, a letter from the medical office arrived declaring me unfit to hold a license because my eyesight is too poor. The letter had been delayed in the mail...)

As for recommended sims, the cream of the crop by far are IL2 Sturmovik and its sequel IL2 Forgotten Battles -- both have the best flight models of any PC sim, bar none. Looking forward to LOMAC (Lock On: Modern Air Combat) for some A-10 action. Lots of older sims, too: Enemy Engaged: Comanche vs. Hokum is a fun helo sim, European Air War (bit of an oldie) is pretty good (won't run on XP, but doesn't matter since I have to use 98 for the HOTAS), Falcon 4.0, Freespace2 (space sim, but really really good one). Keep meaning to try Independence War and Independence War 2 (two relatively "realistic" space sims).

Crimson Skies is fun flying game too (although not realistic enough to call it a sim).

Sorry for hijacking the thread a bit, rhosk.

Re: Checking for Windows 98 SE

I'm working on a video game which combines flight simulator with combat simulator. Basically it simulates the experience of getting beat up inside of a flight simulator. Sim sim.

The objective is to escape the flight simulator and then find a way out of the research facility without getting groped by Arnold Schwarzenegger...

Re: Checking for Windows 98 SE

BTW, for testing purposes, I needed to uninstall WMP 9 from my laptop. Guess what? No uninstaller for WMP 9. This is a widespread, but relatively unknown problem. Windows XP and ME have no uninstaller for WMP 9.

Yet, where there's a will, there's a way. Here's a little command you can enter into your Run box from the start menu in XP or ME, just in case you ever want to "roll back" to a previous version:

                        RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\WINDOWS\INF\wmp.inf,Uninstall

Thanks again all. The help around here is still second to none!
