  • DVD support??

I am new to AMS, so forgive me if this question is off base, but...

Is it possible or will it be in the future to create menus on DVD?? With the storage capacity of DVD and many other advantages... it would be a good thing!!

    Thanks in advance.

The medium you use to store the menu on is irrelevant. You can use a floppy disk if you can store it on there. DVD is definitely possible....as long as you have a DVD burner that is . Mind you, that doesn't mean you can create a menu capable of playing in a standard DVD player. Only one that can be played in a DVD-ROM drive. You probably already knew that, but just wanted to make sure.

      Re: DVD support??

We recently wanted to do something similar to what you described and found that the Win DVD player took over and played the content and didn't allow the AutoPlay to function. When we clicked on Autoplay directly it either crashed the system or wouldn't play. We would like to do this too, so please let us know if you had a different experience.

Hmm, I could be mistaken then. It's possible there might be conflicts with DVD player software. Just out of curiosity, did you try it in any other systems? Anything running a different kind of DVD decoder software? Like PowerDVD or SoftDVD? What about the version of Windows you're testing with. What version did you use, and did you test any others?

Thanks for the ideas. No we didn't try any other DVD players. We were using WinDVD, which most machines around here have as the default player. The machine systems were Windows 98 and Windows 2000.
We are up against a strict deadline, so we've gone into survival mode right now, and will explore the issue more on the next version. Any suggestions would be helpful!

            Re: DVD support??

            Hi all,

Being in the replication buissness for over three years now I've got some awnsers on how the DVD software players are taking over.

Are we talking plain DVD-ROM here or a DVD-video hybrid ?(eg DVD-video plus ROM content)As your consumer player will never play any Windows applications !

All DVD video players (consumer players) will check for two folders in the root, Video_TS and Audio_TS. The files in the Video folder consist of VOB files which hold both the audio and video as wel ass nevigation code and some other files.

Using you're PC with DVD drive as a DVD video player the software will emulate this behaviour. Only with the Autoinsert notification turned on, and the settings for the sofftware player set to something as not to detect wether a DVD is inserted a Autorun command will work.

            Hope this clears you're questions

Your post was helpful, but I still have some questions. I hope someone can answer them.

What do you mean by "Only with the Autoinsert notification turned on, and the settings for the sofftware player set to something as not to detect wether a DVD is inserted a Autorun command will work."

This is a DVD video only, no DVD-ROM on it.

              Thanks.

                Re: DVD support??

I have experienced that software DVD players are taking over controll of the system. They will look at all disc's inserted for the format, eg CD/DVD. When it is DVD They will search the root for Video_TS and play the Title menu.
When you create a hybrid DVD with a autorun in the root as well, the DVD software player seems to gain the systems favour. Strange as the DVD is inserted in a PC system. So your carefully designed application will not play.

In order to get the most out of hybrid change the settings for your're software and system to the allready mentioned.

                  Re: DVD support??

Your're DVD software player should be controlled by the user. Auto insert notification should preferably be used by the system. It seems to be "better" to manually control DVD player software. So detect the disc DVD video yourselve and let it play the title menu. Auto insert will then detect all Autorun files regardless of the disc format.

                    Re: DVD support??

Thanks for the information. I get it now. But (isn't there always a but) do you want to have people turning off there autoinsert just to play your DVD and isn't that a complicated process that most people wouldn't be able to do?
