  • Decompression Errors

I gather there has been controversy over Setup Factory and decompression errors for several years. I thought I might add my two cents...

A co-worker of mine is distributing a VB6 application with Setup Factory 5. This setup.exe install fine on my computer (Windows 98) but does not install on my boss's computer (Windows 2000) and a test machine (Windows NT). Both of the NT-based machines get a Decompression error #5 half-way through the installation. A re-compile of the setup has no effect.

All of the machines we tested the setup on are obtaining the setup.exe file from over our company's network, not a bad CD-ROM or Floppy disk. We have even copied the setup.exe file down to the local machines and ran it there to no differing consequences.

Has there been any progress made on this problem?

    Thank you!

    Re: Decompression Errors

    Hi,
Have you tried creating the installation on different systems? Or perhaps try adding the contents of: "SR.REG" (located in the default Setup Factory Directory) to your registry.
Decompression Error #5 means: "Could not open output file" internally.
The first thing to do, if an installation fails on a system, is to clean out the system's temporary directory, restart the system, and then try running the installation again.
The real problem with this” error" is that we have been unable to recreate this on our side. As a result we have been unable to zero in on possible solutions.
Any help that we can get on this subject would definitely be very appreciated.

    mark.

      Mark,

I attempted the couple of suggestions you had (adding the SR.REG contents to the destination machine and emptying the "Temp" folder), but the decompression error still occurs. Thought you might like to know...

        Re: Decompression Errors

I too am getting the Decompression Error #5. I have a setup built on a VB6 application that's fine. I also created a setup of just the EXE file to avoid a lengthy download. It is that setup, trying to install one file, that causes the error #5. I have downloaded and installed the latest version, cleaned my temp directory, added the SR.REG to my registry, and I still get the error.

          partmart,

I have yet to find an answer to this problem myself, but I thought that I should add that the decompression error also occurs in the VB6 (SP5) compiled EXE in my setup as well.

            Re: Decompression Errors

            Hi,
One thing I would take a look at is your project file. Open up the Setup Factory Project that is causing these errors and look at the dates associated with the files.
So on the main Setup Factory screen look at the DATE column, make sure that there are no "strange" dates. (I.E. 16-May-2032, or 1-Jan-1970)
Try re-compiling the VB6 exe and see if that helps the problem.

            mark.
