  • Problem with fonts

I'm having a problem with the installation of fonts. The viewer I'm distributing with my project isn't recognizing the installed TTF's. I can see them in the Windows/Fonts folder and other programs can access them.

However, if I install the fonts manually using the add new fonts command my viewer will recognize them.

My guess is that the viewer is looking for the .fot files in the registry. San someone tell me how to add those files to the registry?

    Thanks,

    Focus

    Re: Problem with fonts

    Hi,
Have you tried rebooting the system after the FONTS are installed?
How are you installing your fonts? Are you checking the "Register as True Type Font" checkbox on the ADVANCED tab of your fonts FILE PROPERTIES?
If you install your fonts this way and look in the registry (either
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts
    or
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Fonts
depending on what OS your are running) you should see that the fonts are entered there properly.

    mark.

      Re: Problem with fonts

I am doeing a system reboot and have confirmed that the entries were made to the registry. The program I'm having a problem with is Adobe FrameViewer. While all other programs (word etc.) are recognizing the fonts FV isn't unless I do the install manually from the windows Fonts folder. Does anyon know shy this might be happening?

I even manually edited the registry to exactly match my other computer with the fonts installed with no luck. Is there anything that the Windows installer might be doing differently?

        Re: Problem with fonts

        Hi,
This almost sounds like a problem with FrameViewer rather then a Setup Factory problem, especially since other programs can use the font properly. Perhaps Adobe has information on font problems with FrameViewer?
I've never used FrameViewer so I really don't have any tips about this.
Have you tried this on more then one computer, more then one operating system? Which Operating Systems does this fail on? Does it succeed on any?

          Re: Problem with fonts

          Hi Mark,

After several hours on the phone with Adobe the insisted their product is working fine since it recognizes the fonts if you install them through the windows font folder.

With the help of an IT bud we did solve the problem. It has to do with how Adobe reads fonts, how SF (and every other installer I've seen) installs fonts but mostly how windows still uses the 3.1 architexture to install the fonts then uses a subcode to move them from the ini file to the registry.

          The solution:

Amid the myriad of files that noone seems to know what they do that come with windows is a program called Fontreg.exe. If you copy this into the shell and make sure it is set to run before installation it will prime windows to recieve the fonts. The enduser won't even know it was executed. I don't know exactly what it does or why it's neccessary but it works.

Hope my experience will help others in the future.
