PROBLEM: Setup Starts and then Crashes

    Document ID: IR01006
The information in this article applies to:
    • Setup Factory 5.0
    • Visual Patch 1.0

    SUMMARY

This article explains a problem where an installation created with Setup Factory 5.0 or Visual Patch 1.0 will start and then crash right away without warning or error messages.

    DISCUSSION

If you have a user who is reporting a problem where an installation routine starts, displays the Extracting Files dialog, and then automatically quits, this problem is most likely related to a corrupt or incompatible version of riched32.dll. These two products use the Microsft Rich Edit control to display text on the screens during the setup process.

Please see: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q218/8/38.ASP for more information on this problem.

The Microsoft Knowledge Base article has information on how users should solve this problem. It involves extracting riched32.dll from the CAB files on the original Windows CD-ROM.

You might also want to read this article: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q197/5/80.asp, it describes the issues related to distribution riched32.dll.
