  • Adding Shortcut Comments

When creating a shortcut using an Action is there any way to put text into the Shortcut Comments field box which is available in Win2000 and WinXP (see properties on any shortcut) - so when the user hovers the mouse over it, it shows a custom text rather than the path of the shortcut?

No I'm sorry, there's currently no way to populate the "Comment" field of the shortcut through Setup Factory 6.0's shortcut creation.

What a pity - look forward to a future update - other than that Setup Factory is excellent!

        Re: Adding Shortcut Comments

One method you could use to accomplish it is to create the shortcut on your system with all of the information you wish to have, ie. including the comments and then just install that file to the proper location on the end user's system.

The problem is that the path where they install the file will likely not be the same on your system as theirs. But what you could do is create an environment variable on their system during the install which will hold the path to the file the shortcut points to. So when you create it on your system, use that same environment variable. You can find information on creating environment variables in the following Knowledge Base article:

One drawback is the fact that the user will need to reboot for that to take effect.

Also note that in order to add a shortcut file to your install, you must drag and drop it in the design window rather than using the "Add" command.

        Hope that helps.
