  • "Decompression error" - but verify archive checked.

Our installer is almost 50megs. We have "verify archive" checked; however on one machine, we keep getting

    "Error"
    "C:\program files\<path>\buupload.app"
"A decompression error has been detected. (#6)
"A decompression error has been detected._RW"

(where path is the user path they installed to)
we've tried redownloading, recopying, pulling off cd... any ideas?

    Some possible causes may be:

    1) Does that user have administrative permissions to install the software? If they don't have the required permissions, it will error out when a file is installed to a location that doesn't have write access.

    2) Does the user have enough free disk space on the machine?

    3) Is the installation path that the user is supplying a valid destination path?

win98, no restrictions, bare bones machine.

      2) Does the user have enough free disk space on the

      over 3 gigs free

Yes; it gets about 60-70% done with the install; it always errors out on the same file "Buupload.app" there is plenty of dispspace avaialble...

In that case it sounds like the file may have a corrupt file header or something along those lines, which wouldn't necessarily be affected on all OS's. Is this on one of your test machines, or one of your customers? If this is something you can replicate, if you remove that one file, does it complete successfully? Was that file possibly in use at the time of the build? Try rebuilding the install by referencing the file from a different location so you can ensure if wasn't being used. See if that makes any difference.

Works on other 98 boxes, ME, XP, 2K, NT4
Just this one box... always the same file...
This happens to be a test machine, but I've already re-imaged it to a clean install; and still no go.
i've recompiled and it is ok... the file was DEFINATELY not in use at the time.

My concern is that "verify archive" isn'tn verifying.....

Are you always installing to the same destination for your application? Does that destination location change at all between each of your tests? What is the exact path of your destination directory? Do all of your files go to that location, or just that one?

You are receiving a "Read/Write" error for some reason so that is the problem, however I'm not sure of the exact cause on that system.

Try clearing the system's temporary directory, rebooting and trying it again. Also make sure there are no remnants of previous tests each time you test again.

What happens if you try to install the file to a different location? Does it succeed then?

What happens if you remove that file from your install as a test? Does it succeed?

You also might want to check the health of the hard drive. (Since it's using some kind of FAT file system, you could use spinrite to do the job, although it isn't free, and it takes a while to perform a test, it's the only tool that will test your drive's health with any degree of certainty. On the cheap, you could just visit the manufacturer's web site and download a utility to read the drive's S.M.A.R.T. data, or look for a generic S.M.A.R.T. program that supports your drive.)

                Bah, that should be: spinrite.
